Commercial Net Zero Graduate Scheme

Description

Contract type: 2-year fixed-term contract. All graduates who have completed the programme to date have been offered permanent contracts.

Hours: Full Time, 37.5 hours per week

Location: Canary Wharf, London

WFH policy: Employees are required to attend the office 2 days/week.

Flexible working: Informal flexible work patterns subject to line manager discretion including a 9-day fortnight.

LCCC is relaunching our Net Zero Graduate Scheme with the opportunity for 3 successful candidates to join us. The Graduate scheme will provide the opportunity to work across multiple areas in LCCC and be involved in some of the UK's most exciting and high-profile Net Zero programmes and projects, as well as the potential to be involved in innovative low carbon schemes that are helping the UK reach our 2050 Net Zero target. This will be a 24-month rotational placement rotating through three of our departments; Scheme Delivery, Strategy & Development and Operations.

Scheme Delivery

Advises government on the design of low-carbon contracts and manages their delivery across renewable power, hydrogen, carbon capture, and nuclear. The team oversees projects from development through construction, commissioning, and long-term operations, ensuring contracts meet policy objectives and stay on track. Work includes commercial, contractual and relationship management, regular site visits, and supporting the development and transition of new Net Zero schemes into live operational portfolios.

Strategy & Development

Drives the organisation's growth and future direction. The team develops company strategy, measures performance, manages business-wide change, and supports stakeholder engagement. It advises government on new and evolving schemes, supports policy and regulatory engagement, and manages bespoke and new schemes with complex characteristics. Work includes strategic analysis, business planning, governance, scheme design, and supporting senior leadership through board, shareholder, and government briefings.

Operations

Sits at the centre of scheme delivery, connecting day-to-day operations with technical expertise, data, assurance, and system change. The team ensures schemes operate smoothly, reliably, and transparently while driving continuous improvement and innovation. Work spans settlement operations, data and analytics, technical assurance, stakeholder engagement, and the delivery of new systems. Graduates take ownership of real projects that improve efficiency, reduce risk, and support the effective operation of Net Zero schemes.

Key Responsibilities

Strategy & Development

  • Support in presenting to the Government an area of future change in one of our existing schemes
  • Help appraise and assess the impact of potential new schemes (such as H2 Storage, Sustainable Aviation Fuels or, Advanced Modular Reactors (nuclear).
  • Help prepare the annual Board Strategy Day
  • Assist the development of our Annual Report or the preparation of briefing materials in advance of our regular shareholder meetings
  • Help coordinate delivery of change within the business
  • Help with the selection of events and engagements we should prioritize attendance or presentations
  • Assist with the coordination with other external organisations on enquiries, imminent press releases or help develop FAQs in relation to industry developments
  • Help create our organisational performance management tools or feeding back progress to the business
  • Help with the development of policy and contractual positions for a new scheme, working with internal and external experts across technical, commercial, and legal disciplines
  • Help manage the development of our digital systems that are necessary to deliver a new scheme
  • Help with assessment and selection of the most appropriate governance structure for a new scheme

Scheme Delivery

  • Assisting Contract Managers and/Lead Contract Managers with;
  • Contract Management tasks such as CfD Milestone compliance
  • Engagement with counterparties across the CfD portfolio
  • Site engagement visits
  • Preparing Contract Approval papers and associated presentation decks
  • Relationship management
  • Supporting advisory work by helping to analyse policy proposals and contractual positions
  • Continuous Improvement Projects such as process enhancements and/or efficiencies including use of digital enhancements

Operations

  • Solve real operational problems and lead the delivery of fixes, improvements, and solutions.
  • Support day-to-day scheme operations, helping us continuously improve how our schemes run.
  • Help bring new schemes to life, working with subject matter experts to understand how they will work in practice and what we need to deliver them.
  • Develop and maintain processes, change ideas, and system requirements that make our operations smoother and more efficient.
  • Understand scheme data to spot trends, highlight risks, and identify opportunities to improve how we work.
  • Build an understanding of settlement mechanics and how they are applied across our systems and audit tools.
  • Take ownership of issues during your placement, working through the problem, assessing the impact, and presenting clear, practical solutions.

General Responsibilities

  • Undertake supported engagement with internal and external stakeholders to drive operational improvement/excellence.
  • This is not an exhaustive list of duties, and LCCC reserves the right to make reasonable changes to the scheme structure and teams associated with the scheme in line with business needs.

Skills, Knowledge, and Expertise

Essential:

  • Interest and passion for low carbon energy initiatives and developments
  • At least a 2:2 in one of the following subjects:
    • STEM Subject
    • Energy
    • Environment
    • Policy/Politics
    • Economics/Business
    • Geography
    • Accounting and Finance
    • Law
    • History
  • Aptitude for problem solving to develop/improve processes
  • Strong communication skills

Desirable Skills:

  • Analytical thinking (both qualitative and quantitative)
  • An interest in the coordination or management of projects in either a business or academic setting
  • Interest and/or experience in contract management
