About the business area

Our Group Chief Information Office (GCIO) builds the digital platforms, systems, and products our customers use every day. Within GCIO, our Data teams protect, deliver, and enhance the value of data and information assets, turning vast data into powerful insights, helping us better understand our customers, our business, and the world we work in.

Who you are

We’re looking for curious problem-solvers who love working with real-life data and want to work in a fast-paced business, where technology and data power our present and transform our future.

You could be a great match if you’re:

  • An analytical thinker: You enjoy working through tricky problems, making sense of data, and spotting patterns that others might miss. You’re excited by the idea of helping HSBC become a truly data-driven organisation.
  • A clear communicator: You can break down complex ideas and explain what the data is telling us in a way that makes sense to different people – from technical experts to banking teams.
  • Detail-focused and good with tools: You’re excited to explore new technologies and tools that help uncover powerful insights.
  • Driven and self-motivated: You take ownership of your work, stay focused in fast-paced environments, and always look for ways to learn, improve, and help your team succeed.
  • Quick to learn: You’re adaptable and open-minded, keen to pick up new tools, approaches, and ways of working – across different teams, cultures, and time zones.
  • Self-aware: You understand how your actions and communication come across to others, and you want to grow both personally and professionally.

What you’ll do

As a Data graduate, you could be working on a wide range of exciting projects – what you work on will depend on your team.

Here’s a taste of what you could get involved in:

  • Become a skilled data practitioner: Learn how to manage, analyse, and optimise data to support smart decision-making, meet regulatory requirements, and drive digital transformation.
  • Champion a data-first mindset: Help HSBC adopt a data-driven culture, making sure data is at the heart of how we design solutions and make decisions.
  • Collaborate across teams: Work with colleagues from across the business to connect the dots between data, technology, products, and services.
  • Tell stories with data: Use tools like SQL, Python, Qlik, and Spark to break down complex data and create clear, compelling narratives that inform business decisions.
  • Build a clean data environment: Help keep our data accurate, reliable, and ready to help us meet regulatory requirements.

What you’ll learn

Your learning journey starts on day one, and over two years, you’ll have the chance to build real-world skills that set you up for success.

Here’s what’s in store:

  • Technical training that counts: From classroom sessions to self-led learning, you’ll build expertise in key areas like data movement, governance, management, quality, and reporting. You’ll also get to explore new tools, languages, and data platforms.
  • Certifications that show your skills: You’ll have an allowance to fund industry-recognised certifications that help you grow and prove your abilities as a data practitioner. Your team may also provide extra funding for role-specific certifications.
  • Hands-on learning: Get involved in hackathons, innovation projects, and other events that help you apply your skills, tackle new challenges, and collaborate with colleagues across HSBC.

Your application journey

As part of your application, you’ll complete a short online coding test. This helps us understand your current skills so we can tailor our support and help you get the most from the programme.
