About the business area

Our technology teams sit within our Group Chief Information Office (GCIO), building the digital platforms, systems, and products our customers and colleagues use every day, keeping assets and data secure, and delivering exceptional digital experiences.

Who you are

We’re looking for curious, driven problem-solvers who love collaborating and using technology to solve real-world problems. What matters most is your mindset, your eagerness to learn, your approach to challenges and how you work with others.

You could be a great match if you’re:

  • A natural collaborator: You’re happy working with people from all backgrounds – across teams, countries and cultures. Great engineering requires teamwork, so you’re comfortable sharing ideas and listening to others.
  • A problem solver: You like breaking down complex problems, thinking through challenges carefully and finding smart, logical solutions.
  • Focused on quality: You always want to deliver the best work and enjoy bringing your ideas to life through high-quality code.
  • Self-motivated and driven: You take pride in your work, take ownership of what you do, and want to keep improving. You’re always looking for answers, new skills, and ways to help your team succeed.
  • Eager to learn: Technology moves fast – and so do you. You’re excited to explore new tools, platforms, and ways of working to keep innovating and improving.
  • Self-aware: You’re mindful of how your actions and communication come across to others. You work thoughtfully with people from different cultures and backgrounds.

What you’ll do

As an engineering graduate, you could be working on a wide range of exciting projects – what you work on will depend on your team, but wherever you are, you’ll be helping to shape technology that supports over 200,000 colleagues and 40 million customers around the world.

Here’s a taste of what you could get involved in:

  • Help HSBC take a digital-first approach – developing new products and services, enhancing existing ones, and providing software support that keeps our global teams moving.
  • Play a key role in designing, testing, and maintaining the systems that power how we work, drive efficiencies, and enable change across HSBC.
  • Collaborate with engineers, architects, and other colleagues across the business to understand what’s needed and help set the direction for new products and services.
  • Build solutions that meet specific business needs, are easy to use and support, and can be deployed at scale across the globe.
  • Get hands-on with the latest code frameworks, programming languages, and AI tools, while learning modern DevOps practices – blending software development and operations to deliver faster and better solutions.
  • Help monitor performance, spot and solve technical issues, and recommend improvements to keep everything running smoothly.

What you’ll learn

Over two years, you’ll take part in a mix of technical training, skills coaching, and hands-on experiences that will help you grow as an engineer.

Here’s what’s in store:

  • Technical development: From classroom sessions to self-led learning and exciting hackathons, you’ll get the chance to explore new coding languages, tech stacks, and engineering best practices.
  • Certifications that count: You’ll have funding to complete industry-recognised certifications in platforms that are relevant to your role, with opportunities for further training in other languages and tools supported by your team.

By the end of the programme, you’ll have the tools, knowledge, and confidence to take your next step – whether that’s deepening your technical expertise or starting to lead projects of your own.

Your application journey

As part of your application, you’ll complete a short online coding test. This helps us understand your current programming skills so we can tailor our support and help you get the most from the programme.
