Graduate Programme

Now that you have finished your degree, it is time to take the first step of your career and join our two-year graduate training programme. We are offering the opportunity for you to develop knowledge, skills, and experience which will enable you to have a successful career in engineering and construction.

Murphy Applied Engineering is currently hiring Graduate Chemical Engineers, based at our head office in Kentish Town, London to work alongside our experienced design engineers delivering multidiscipline gas transmission and distribution projects across the UK and other Murphy Territories Intentionally. The Graduate Chemical Engineer will report directly to our Senior Process Engineers, assisting the team with the production of reports, calculations, and documentation to support the delivery of projects and tender design proposals. You will be given the opportunity to work on different projects and gain an understanding of various aspects of Chemical engineering broadening your understanding and putting into practice what you have learnt during your time at university.

Key Responsibilities Will Include

  • Employ Engineering Design principles and Chemical Engineering Design methodologies to determine optimum process design solutions
  • Develop designs, both conceptual and detailed for Compressor Stations and Terminals, Gas Pipelines, and Pressure Reduction Stations and AGIs
  • Prepare design reports and detailed calculations
  • Carry out research to support design decisions
  • Familiarise yourself with Institution of Gas Engineers Specifications and all other relevant UK transmission and distribution client standards related to the design of works’ elements
  • Assisting in developing Process Flow Diagrams, P&ID and Mass Balance
  • Participate and scribe in HAZOP and LOPA studies
  • Develop Hazardous Area Classifications and Zoning Diagrams
  • Collaborate across multidisciplinary teams: process, control, mechanical, safety, and project management; present updates to both technical and non-technical audiences
  • Prioritise process safety, quality, and environmental compliance per UK industry standards and regulations
  • Employ a range of specialist computer applications/simulation software
  • Visit operational gas installations to carry out reviews of existing and proposed modifications
  • Participate in, and positively promote, the Murphy Never Harm Programme
  • Continually implement Murphy’s Safety Health Environmental Sustainability and Quality policies and procedures related to your role
  • Undertake any reasonable duties expected of you
  • Carry out all work in accordance with health and safety and legal requirements
  • Attend and engage fully in any learning and development activities that are deemed appropriate by your line management
  • Participate and engage fully in the company appraisal/performance review processes and constantly work to improve your individual, your team, and the wider group’s performance

Note: In addition to these functions, personnel are required to carry out such other duties as may be reasonably required in order to support the objectives of the Group/Company/Operational Unit.

Studying towards a Chemical Process Engineering Degree, or equivalent.
