The Graduate Façade / External Walls Engineer supports the delivery of façade engineering and external wall fire consultancy services under the supervision of senior engineers. The role provides structured exposure to façade systems, external wall fire performance, and building envelope design, with an emphasis on developing core engineering skills across structural, thermal, and fire performance disciplines.
The Graduate will contribute to technical delivery while developing the judgement, competence, and professional behaviours required to progress within either the façade design or external wall consultancy pathways.

Responsibilities
Under supervision, the Graduate Façade / External Walls Engineer will:
- Support the review of architectural drawings, specifications, and technical information relating to façade and external wall systems.
- Assist in the preparation of technical reports, including external wall fire assessment reports, façade engineering notes, and supporting appendices.
- Support external wall fire safety assessments, including PAS 9980–led appraisals and related desktop studies.
- Participate in site inspections and intrusive surveys to establish external wall and façade build-ups, materials, fixings, and fire stopping provisions.
- Assist with thermal engineering tasks, including thermal bridging reviews, U-value assessments, condensation risk inputs, and interpretation of modelling outputs under supervision.
- Assist with structural engineering tasks related to façade systems, including basic load paths, fixings concepts, and interpretation of structural calculations prepared by senior engineers.
- Support the coordination and review of test evidence, certifications, and product data relevant to façade and external wall performance.
- Assist senior engineers with coordination between internal disciplines and external stakeholders.
- Attend site visits, design meetings, and client meetings as required, under supervision.
- Maintain accurate records, site notes, and project documentation in accordance with internal procedures.
- Actively participate in training, mentoring, and professional development activities.
- Work in accordance with Jensen Hughes quality, safety, and governance procedures at all times.
Desired Skills and Expertise
- Develop a sound understanding of façade systems, materials, and construction methods.
- Build familiarity with external wall fire safety principles, relevant legislation, and guidance.
- Gain practical site experience through inspections and surveys.
- Develop core skills in technical report writing and structured engineering reasoning.
- Build foundational understanding of thermal and structural performance as applied to façade systems.
- Demonstrate increasing independence in technical tasks under supervision.
- Progress towards professional accreditation and longer-term chartership pathways.
Requirements and Qualifications
To ensure you're ready to succeed from day one, you'll need:
- Right to work in the United Kingdom.
- Master's degree (achieved or expected) in Façade Engineering, Civil or Structural Engineering, Architecture, Building Engineering, Materials Science, or a related discipline.
- Basic understanding of building design and construction principles.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills in English.
- Willingness to learn and develop technical capability within a consultancy environment.
Additional qualifications or experience that could help you succeed even further include:
- Interest in façade engineering, external walls, and fire safety.
- Ability to read and interpret architectural drawings and specifications.
- Interest in thermal and/or structural aspects of façade performance.
- Strong organisational skills and attention to detail.
- Collaborative approach and willingness to work as part of a multidisciplinary team.
- Additional language skills are advantageous but not essential.
