About the Internship

An internship programme is a structured, temporary work experience offered to current students, recent graduates, or individuals looking to gain practical experience in a specific field. It serves as a bridge between academic education and the professional world, allowing participants to apply what they've learned in real-world settings.

This role offers an intern a 12-month placement within Haven’s Sustainability function, supporting the Head of Sustainability to drive and deliver Haven’s Sustainability agenda.

The intern will need to work cross functionally across various Haven teams to support the delivery of Havens overall Sustainability agenda through a number of different owners and areas across the business.

Responsible for supporting key aspects of the sustainability agenda, including the development of Haven’s first Sustainability strategy , which is structured across seven priority areas – Decarbonisation, Water, Waste, Biodiversity, Inclusive Culture, Employment & Development and Community Impact, underpinned by Haven’s commitment to operating responsibly (Governance) – this role will be required to work closely with responsible priority owners, to support and monitor progress.

With a specific focus on Sustainability reporting, data collection and analysis, they will play a key role in supporting overall Sustainability compliance, governance and reporting – externally through sustainability reports and legislative requirements and internally to the Executive, key business stakeholders and the broader business.

Key responsibilities

Sustainability Strategy, Governance & Reporting:

  • Support the development and evolution of Haven’s first Sustainability strategy, plans and commitments, in collaboration with each workstream’s accountable owner.
  • Support the establishment and delivery of sustainability governance, including cross-functional forums, reporting and processes, this will include:
  • Supporting the arrangement and delivery of (where appropriate) reviews, meetings, etc. at all levels (board, working groups, stakeholders, etc.).
  • Tracking and reporting progress, activity and data.
  • Support the production of Haven’s annual Sustainability report
  • Manage quarterly monitoring of agreed strategic Sustainability theme KPIs for each priority area.
  • Oversee regular data collection for Blackstone.
  • Complete the annual Blackstone Sustainability Survey (Private Equity).
  • Complete the annual Blackstone GRESB Submission (Real Estate).
  • Manage Haven’s annual Carbon Footprint calculation.
  • Support the business with compliance against statutory reporting and other requirements related to Sustainability matters (e.g. EPR, ESOS, TCFD, SECR, etc.).

Support of Haven’s Decarbonisation Strategy, governance and activities:

  • Support the development, delivery and reporting of Haven’s Decarbonisation strategy, to deliver the key strategic goal of:
    Operational Net Zero by 2040.
  • Ensure business-wide commitment to and effective audit, governance and management of decarbonisation risks and opportunities across the business.
  • Develop and deploy knowledge and training materials and tools to empower all teams to continuously live and work sustainably in support of Haven’s decarbonisation strategy.
  • Support teams across the business to establish appropriate policies, processes and governance to support Haven’s Decarbonisation strategy.

Essential skills

  • This role requires a high-level of understanding of Sustainability topics.
  • This role needs to have the ability to work with the key relationships above and to influence across a range of levels up to Head of Department as well as director/ board level stakeholders.
  • This role will be working with a varied range of stakeholders to deliver and embed Sustainability best practice across Haven.
  • This role will need to work closely with key stakeholders across the business but also be able to work independently.
  • Understanding of Sustainability reporting and wider data analysis.
  • High attention to detail, highly organised and great time management skills. Be able to juggle multiple projects at any one time.
  • Will require strategic thinking along with tactical decision making.
  • No direct reports but responsible for influencing team at all levels across Haven
  • Needs to have the interpersonal skills and judgement to be able to adapt approach.
  • Has good personal time management.
  • Has the desire and capability to learn.
  • Demonstrates a high level of attention to detail.
  • Displays an enthusiastic can-do attitude.
  • Is curious and willing to ask questions – willing to challenge the status quo and be creative in approach.

Based in Hemel Hempstead 3 days per week. Hybrid working offered.
