Portal has built the world’s only platform capable of sequencing full-length proteins at the single molecule level. Our nanopore technology reads intact proteins of any size, capturing information about both sequence and post-translational modifications in a manner no other system can match.
Our technology enables scientists to see protein biology in entirely new ways, with applications across drug discovery, diagnostics, and biosecurity.
About The Role
We are seeking undergraduate, Master's or PhD Student Interns to join Portal Biotech. Based in our headquarters in Scale Space, White City, London, this paid, 12-week summer internship will give you the opportunity to experience industry. You will work closely with our multidisciplinary teams and gain hands-on experience contributing to cutting-edge research and technology development. Internships are available in the following departments:
- Cartridge team — develops the part of Portal's technology that incorporates our biological nanopores into a robust flow cell that interfaces with our electronics.
- Hardware team — unites Software, Electronics, and Mechanics to build a state-of-the-art proteomics sequencing instrument. The team designs, integrates, and iterates the full system end-to-end.
- Bioinformatics team — builds the data infrastructure, systems, and applications that turn raw Nanopore signals into biological insights, serving both internal teams and external users, as well as delivering AI/ML insights to solve complex Data Science problems.
- Development Operations team — designs, tests and optimises biological kits through hands-on laboratory work, translating early ideas into validated products ready for real-world use.
- Applications team — performs early-stage R&D to develop and optimise the Portal protein nanopore sequencing technology including protein, biochemistry and electrophysiology workflows.

- Good problem-solving skills and a proactive approach to learning
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to organise tasks and manage time effectively during a short placement
- Enthusiasm for working in a fast-paced, start-up research environment
- Availability to undertake a full-time 12-week internship placement
Desirable
- Previous laboratory, research or project experience gained through coursework or placements
- Familiarity with basic laboratory techniques, data analysis or computational tools relevant to your discipline
- Experience working in a multidisciplinary or collaborative research environment
- Experience with programming or data analysis tools (for example Python, MATLAB or R)
- Evidence of initiative through extracurricular projects, competitions or student societies
This role requires candidates to have full, unrestricted, and immediate right to work in the UK.
