Introduction

The Strategic Estates team is responsible for looking after and improving the Parliamentary Estate , ensuring that Parliament’s buildings and infrastructure remain safe, functional, and fit for the future. While part of the House of Commons, the team also provides services to the House of Lords, operating in a unique and high-profile environment that balances conservation and modernisation within a World Heritage Site .

The Project Delivery Team plays a crucial role in managing a diverse portfolio of refurbishment, conservation, and construction projects, ensuring that the estate continues to support the work of both Houses. With 181 live projects and a portfolio value exceeding £2bn, the team is committed to delivering work that is on time, on budget, and of the highest quality.

The Role

As a Project Leader (Sandwich Student), you will play a key role in supporting the successful delivery of construction, refurbishment, and maintenance projects across the Parliamentary Estate. Under the guidance of an Assistant Director, you will gain hands-on experience managing live projects in a high-profile environment, applying your knowledge and developing key skills in project management.

This role provides an excellent opportunity to lead smaller projects independently while supporting Senior Project Leaders on major initiatives. You will work closely with internal and external stakeholders , ensuring project objectives are met effectively.

Some of the responsibilities for this role include:

  • Assisting in the planning, programming, and delivery of construction and maintenance projects.
  • Writing Business Cases to secure project funding.
  • Identifying and mitigating risks to ensure successful project outcomes.
  • Supporting the procurement and appointment of consultants and contractors.
  • Holding progress meetings to monitor cost, quality, and programme delivery.
  • Managing stakeholder relationships and ensuring clear communication of project updates.

This placement will also allow you to work towards professional competencies with institutions such as RICS, APM, ICE, CIOB, or CIBSE .

Skills and Experience

To be successful in this role, you will demonstrate:

  • Currently studying a degree in Building, Construction, Surveying, Engineering, or Project Management (non-technical or ICT project management courses are unlikely to be suitable).
  • Self-motivation with a proactive approach and eagerness to learn.
  • Great planning, organisational, and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to explain technical concepts to different audiences.
  • Effective interpersonal and teamwork skills, with a commitment to fostering an inclusive workplace.
