About the programme

A lot of lives depend on the systems we maintain and deliver. So, we need to make sure they are safe even if something goes wrong. On this two-year programme, you’ll about learn how to identify, analyse and safeguard against hazards, failures and faults. In the process, you’ll develop your understanding of everything from production and manufacturing to project management, design and safety.

The aim of this programme is to give you a broad education in all areas of hazard management that will enable your development as a safety case author. You will conduct placements at several of our sites and projects, and training with safety case authors, human factors consultants, engineers of all disciplines, radiation protection advisors and specialists in assessing shielding requirements. We’re looking for graduates with a wide range of qualities, including high technical skills, good interpersonal skills and a willingness to learn and adapt to new circumstances.

Safety Case/Hazard Management at Babcock

As a safety case author your responsibility will be to evaluate the risks associated with nuclear operations conducted and demonstrate through provision of safety justifications that the risks are As Low As Reasonably Practicable (ALARP). This involves producing, maintaining, and developing an authorised/licensed suite of Site Safety Justification documentation to achieve the permissioning of nuclear facilities. Additionally, Safety Case Authors conduct assessments, providing independent technical evaluations of nuclear facilities and the associated systems, structures, and components.

Your work will support the safe construction, operation and decommissioning of civil nuclear facilities and Royal Navy submarines. You will be trained to comply with regulations and work with regulating bodies to provide hazard management advice for a wide range of engineering projects and sites using various methodologies across all stages of the site/facility lifecycle.

What you'll need

  • You’ll need a BSc or BEng (Hons) degree in a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Maths) subject.
  • A postgraduate qualification in Nuclear Science, such as an MSc or MEng, would be very useful.

Where you'll be based

Places on our Safety Case/Hazard Management programme for Autumn 2025 are available in our Nuclear sector at HM Naval Base Clyde and in Warrington. We ask our graduates to be adaptable as there is the potential to undertake placements in other locations during their programme.
