Advice featuring AMD
Alex, CNS Software Engineering Intern
After my third year of university, I spent five months interning at AMD (Cambridge, UK) as a 'CNS Software Engineering Intern'. This internship counted towards my degree as a required industrial placement. After graduating in the summer of 2022, I rejoined AMD as a software engineer, working in the Linux Network Driver team. My team maintains and develops the Linux kernel Driver for Xilinx/AMD network adapters.
Working at AMD involves solving challenging problems and constant learning. It is a relaxed working atmosphere with plenty of collaboration and growth opportunities. The hybrid working arrangement gives excellent flexibility and often allows me to go for a run during my lunch break. Outside of work, I enjoy travelling and watching cricket.
Ahmed, CPU Verification Engineer
I’m Ahmed – a CPU Verification Engineer by trade, based in Cambridge UK.
I’ve been living here since 2017 having previously lived in Leeds, Swindon, Southampton and Watford in the UK.
I’ve worked for Imagination Technologies and Arm prior to joining AMD in July 2022.
I’ve always wanted to work on the latest x86 processors but there were no such opportunities in the UK.
So when I got a call from the Director of Verification in Boston informing me that AMD had plans to expand in the UK and would like to interview me as part of their expansion plan, I took the opportunity straight away.
The interview was ~6 hours long which allowed for more time to interact with different group managers and find out the different opportunities they have within their teams as well as the work culture at AMD.
I was offered a role almost straight away and it was a no-brainer for me to take up the offer.
Currently, I’m part of the AMD CPU Cores verification team in Boston, MA (USA) where we are designing and verifying the latest Zen CPU cores from AMD.
I’ve taken up gardening as a new hobby so when I’m not working, I spend much of my time looking after my plants. I also enjoy going to gigs, summer festivals and do a bit of reading and sports as well.
