What you’ll be doing

Working in the Engineering and Asset Management function of Engineering Services, you will have the opportunity to widen your knowledge, understanding, and skills in asset management and engineering assurance. Along with part time education and internal training throughout the scheme, you’ll upskill yourself in the relevant skills and competencies required for Network Rail.

Upon successful completion of the Level 6 qualification, you will be able to use your experience to become a fully effective professional with the opportunity to continue learning and developing in a specialist area.

You’ll need to have one of:

  • L3 Network Rail or equivalent Rail apprenticeship
  • A Level BBB including Maths and/or Physical Sciences (120 UCAS points)
  • BTEC National Diploma DDM, including Level 3 Maths and Physical Sciences (128 UCAS points)
  • EAL Technical Extended Diploma in Engineering Technologies, D, including Further Engineering Mathematics, and other options relevant to Electrical, Mechanical or Civil Engineering
  • Access to HE qualifications with 24 Distinctions and 21 Merits, with at least half the course in Maths and Physical Science subjects (122 UCAS points)
  • Equivalent Level 3 qualifications worth 120 UCAS points and including Maths and Physical Sciences

You’ll also need to hold 5 GCSE’s A-C/4-9, including Maths and English, or equivalent.

What you’ll get out of it

On successful completion you will have achieved a level 6 qualification in Rail Systems Engineering.

By the end of the Apprenticeship, you’ll know and have a deep understanding and experience of rail-specific civil engineering including:

  • The requirements, methods and techniques for the installation and maintenance of the rail track support and track foundation.
  • The impact of the railway environment e.g. buildings, geotechnics, structures, bridges, tunnels, embankments, cuttings, vegetation and drainage, and such interfaces as occur between the physical railway assets and systems.

You’ll also be able to:

  • Apply civil engineering skills e.g. buildings & geotechnics to support the effective performance and operation of the business.
  • Provide expert advice and leadership specific to the Rail Civils discipline, but cognisant of how the railway works as an integrated, complex system.
  • Apply and manage a wide range of Rail Civils skill sets, including buildings, geotechnics, structures, bridges, tunnels, embankments, cuttings, vegetation and drainage in order to support and manage research, development, design, procurement, logistics, planning, delivery, quality assurance, inspection, testing, installation, commissioning, maintenance, life cycle management, decommissioning and environmental compliance.
