Main purpose and scope of job

The Collections Intern will be responsible for; the health and safety of all staff, contractors to site and visitors to site, the minimisation of impact to the environment whilst operating the site, delivering customer expectations in terms of service and product quality, and operating the site in an efficient and effective manner in line with the annual budget.

Assist in the development, management and control of the region's operations to achieve agreed revenue and profit targets, through promotion of efficient operating practices and excellent customer service.

Progress and build upon defined standards of operation, safety and compliance – ahead of statutory requirements.

Duties and key responsibilities - SHEQ

Responsible for their own personal safety and that of all personnel within collections and the wider business including others who may be affected by the company’s activities. In particular:

  • Understand and encourage compliance with the company SHEQ Policy.

  • Appreciate the responsibilities of personnel within collections and ensure that each employee knows his/her responsibility and are equipped to play their part.

  • Following suitable training and mentoring conduct Risk Assessments on activities within sites, ensuring that the methods and systems of work are safe. Also that the necessary procedures, rules and regulations designed to achieve this are applied.

  • Following suitable training conduct Aspects and Impacts analysis on activities within the sites ensuring that the methods and systems of work are such to minimise the impact to the environment. Also that the necessary procedures, rules and regulations designed to achieve this are applied.

  • Provide written reports of work methods outlining potential hazards and precautions, and ensure they are complied with.

  • Ensure accident/incident and near-miss reporting procedures are understood and complied with, and assist with accident investigations where appropriate.

  • Ensure all employees and sub-contractors are suitably trained/competent to carry out the prescribed task and that the necessary licenses/certificates of competence are in force and appropriate.

  • Ensure the Statutory Notices, the Integrated Management Systems Policy, Insurance Certificate and the names of Appointed First Aiders are displayed and maintained in prominent locations.

  • Ensure that, where obligated, the Environment Permit is adhered to.

  • Ensure that all new employees in the company are provided with a copy of the policy statement, receive such induction training as may be laid down in procedures, are issued with personal protective equipment as required and their personal responsibilities as set out in this manual.

  • Set a personal example with regard to health & safety and environment matters.

  • Ensure contractual obligations for service and product quality are met.

  • Understand potential future service and / or product requirements of the customer.

Duties and key responsibilities - Operational

  • Monitor all operational working practices to ensure conformance with legislation and generally higher Company standards of quality, safety, and environmental policies.

  • Monitor operations in the region to ensure the achievement of budgeted revenue, operating profit and cash targets.

  • Explore opportunities to optimise the sites/contracts to greatest commercial benefit; through additional consents, improvements to systems and working practices and reconfiguration of plant and equipment in consultation with Group technical support functions.

  • Develop and agree management cost plans for all facilities in the region, focusing on continual improvement within the overall regional and national strategy.

  • Assist the technical team in the development and implementation of new techniques for waste management in order to increase the range of acceptable waste, and to handle current waste in a more efficient and effective manner.

  • Build and reinforce relationships with existing customers, regulatory authorities and others to ensure that the company’s image, reputation and achievements are represented to maximum effect.

  • Establish close links with the communities in which the facilities operate in order to promote and enhance the image of the company.

  • Ensure thorough training and motivation that the standards of staff knowledge and performance are enhanced to the benefit of the employees and the company.

  • Comply with and assist in the implementation of HR policies and the development of training plans.

  • Liaison with Environment Manager to ensure compliance is maintained at our facilities.

  • Develop and share best practice within the region and the wider business.

  • Assist in all aspects of Contract mobilisation in particular in the Dartford and Harborough areas.

Essential knowledge and training offered

  • Satisfactory completion of the relevant Competency Management System modules.

  • Satisfactory completion of the Certificate of Technical Competence.

  • Completion of all other training as defined within the Training Matrix
