About the role
We have an exciting opportunity for students who are currently undertaking a degree in a life science (Chemistry, Biology, Biosciences, Pharmacology, Psychology, or similar) to join our Research & Development function, based in Southampton, on a 12-month undergraduate placement.
This placement is with our Scientific Advocacy team who plays a critical role in communicating BAT’s scientific evidence supporting Tobacco Harm Reduction (THR) and shaping the external scientific narrative around Smokeless Products.
This internship offers a unique opportunity for a student with a strong interest in science communication, public health, or regulatory science to gain hands-on experience in a dynamic and impactful area of research and engagement. The intern will assist in the development and coordination of scientific content, support the planning and execution of engagement activities (such as campus visits and scientific tours), and contribute to the tracking and summarising of emerging THR-related science.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist in drafting, reviewing, and formatting scientific materials (e.g., fact sheets, PowerPoint presentations, summaries) used for external engagement and internal communication.
- Monitor recent publications and news related to Tobacco Harm Reduction and prepare concise summaries to inform the team’s strategic planning.
- Help coordinate and prepare materials for scientific engagement events, including campus visits, tours, and stakeholder meetings.
- Support the maintenance and organisation of scientific content, ensuring materials are up-to-date and accessible.
- Work collaboratively with cross-functional teams including Life Sciences, Science Communications, and Corporate & Regulatory Affairs on joint projects.
- Help track upcoming scientific conferences, maintain publication records, and support logistical planning for abstract submissions and presentations.
- Perform literature reviews and gather data to support the development of coherent and evidence-based scientific narratives across product categories.
What Are We Looking For?
- Students working towards an undergraduate degree in a life science (Chemistry, Biology, Biosciences, Pharmacology, Psychology, or similar).
- Creative thinker with a passion for storytelling and visual communication.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Interest or experience in design, content creation, or multimedia storytelling.
- Interest in developing scientific writing skills.
- Naturally curious and eager to explore new ideas and perspectives.
- Flexible and adaptable, with the ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities.
