Meet Joseph – Graduate Mechanical Engineer, UK

I first came across BAE Systems exploring a career-change. When I saw the role, it reminded me why I became an engineer in the first place - to make a difference.

Changing purpose through career

I joined the graduate programme within Maritime & Land, in submarines. The programme is designed not only to build technical capability, but to equip us with the tools and skills needed to become the leaders of tomorrow.

Coming into engineering as a career-changer could have been daunting, but the structure of the programme has allowed me to ease into the role, play to my strengths and identify areas for development.

Tackling complex challenges every day

I currently work as a mechanical engineer in a relatively new team supporting the SSN‑AUKUS programme. Because of the novelty of the system, no two days are the same.

My role involves creating and supporting solutions to complex engineering problems, backed by sound theory and technical documentation. In a short space of time, I’ve contributed to a wide range of activities; from designing a new data transfer process with partner organisations, to producing system design diagrams and developing functional requirements. 

The complexity is what makes it exciting and being part of that challenge is something I really value.

Feeling valued and growing fast

I feel like I’ve already made a meaningful impact. I’ve built a reputation as someone who gets things done and is willing to help others, which has led to colleagues across the business reaching out to me directly. That has made me feel genuinely valued.

There’s also a strong focus on development. In under a year, I’ve completed multiple courses through the IMechE, and I’ve been encouraged to apply for the internal training focused on developing future talent — something that reinforces the belief that BAE Systems invests in its people.

Collaboration, community and life beyond work

One thing I really enjoy about working here is the culture. The environment naturally encourages collaboration, and even simple things (like fewer distractions in secure areas) mean people genuinely connect and build stronger working relationships.

I relocated from London to Barrow for the role, which was a big change, but one that has paid off. The Lake District is on your doorstep, the scenery is incredible, and there’s a real sense that the area is growing and evolving. It feels safe, welcoming and full of potential.

Looking ahead

My goal is to progress and move into a leadership role. I’ve worked in management before and really enjoyed it, and I know I have more to give - particularly in mentoring and developing others coming into engineering.
