Advice featuring XPO Logistics
Meet Tom, Graduate Management Trainee
I am very happy to share my experience whilst on the XPO Logistics graduate programme. From the moment I joined the programme nearly two years ago, I knew I had made the best decision. I have thoroughly enjoyed every moment of my time on the programme.
Throughout the programme, so many opportunities have been made available to me. I am thankful to work for a company that invests in my future the way XPO have. All throughout my journey, I have received amazing support from my XPO network and i am happy to work for a company that care about my career and personal growth as much I do.
XPO have made many different qualifications & courses available to me along my journey which have allowed me to develop my skill set & broaden my knowledge to be able to progress further in my career. Alongside my programme, I have also been able to complete my leadership & management apprenticeship with Fuel Learning.
The opportunity to work on various sites/contracts across the UK has allowed me to build a vast network of colleagues and industry professionals. My placements have allowed me to gain the practical experience in different areas of the company and build on my skills and knowledge across XPO.
Where were my placements? My first placement I spent 8 months on the ETEX contract in Bristol. My second placement was split across 2 months at XPO Leigh in Manchester & 6 months at Premier Decorations in Wrexham. I am currently on my third & final 8-month placement on the NISBETS contract in Chepstow! Throughout my programme, I was in close communication with the learning & development team about any further exposure I feel I may need when considering my next placement!
I am grateful for the opportunity to be part of this fantastic network & I am excited to see what the future holds as I enter the final stages of my journey on the programme!
I highly recommend the XPO Logistics graduate programme to any university graduate seeking to kickstart their career in the logistics industry. The programme offers a great path to build and develop skills, gain on the job practical experience in various roles, grow your network of industry professionals & achieve qualifications along your journey!
Meet Callum, Graduate Management Trainee
XPO were the employer I chose to work for as they are a global organisation working with some of the world's biggest organisations.
My role within the organisation as a graduate has varied over the 20 months I have been with XPO. The first 8 month placement was split between a customer called Premier Decorations in Wrexham and XPO Leigh, the network site. This placement was great for initial exposure to the business and what to expect while working for XPO. It was customer facing, allowing development of my communication skills.
After this, my next placement was in Widnes at the XPO Tesco site. I started here a week after Go Live for XPO, which was very challenging but offered significant learning as I saw how an operation is built from the early stages. A couple of months in on this placement I took on the role of Operations Supervisor which involved fleet management, driver management and working with external stakeholders frequently.
Next, I spent 5 weeks at Radius which is another XPO customer, which I learnt the difference in operations as Tesco was a large scale operation in comparison to Radius which was significantly smaller which involved a different way of working due to the scale. After these 5 weeks I then moved to the new Daimler Truck operation in which I was given real responsibility as soon as I arrived on site, looking after Goods In and then becoming involved with continuous improvement initiatives. With 4 months left on the scheme I am now set to move on to another challenge in Dublin with Ikea.
Throughout my time on the scheme I have acquired my Transport Management CPC and hopefully by the end I will have my L3 Leadership and Management and also IOSH Managing Safely. This highlights why XPO is a great organisation to work for as they are constantly looking at ways for you to develop.
The other major factor that makes XPO a great place to work - the people. Every site I have been at the people have been great, helping you develop and supporting through anything which in turn allows you to develop a network. Not only the people on site, the support network you gain from the L&D team and Sabrina specifically who oversees the graduates.
In summary, I think it comes down to three things, the opportunities in XPO, not only from my journey but multiple managers I have worked for in XPO all started on the graduate scheme demonstrating the opportunity for development. Secondly, the people, building a network and working for and with people who want you to succeed. Lastly, the responsibility you are trusted with from early on, which only builds your confidence and experience in this industry.
I fell into Logistics by chance and have never looked back.
I fell into Logistics by chance and have never looked back.
The thing I love about XPO, is the opportunities and the people. I've always had opportunities put in front of me and great role models who have helped me get to where I am today.
As an alumnus, I am proof that hard work pays off.
My role now includes developing our people, putting in place training and development strategies and supporting individual and team growth.
I have the pleasure of supporting all of our Graduates on programme and our apprentices. Working with the internal and external markets to ensure our people get the very best personal development.
When I was on the Graduate scheme, I had four brilliant placements. Working with large customers, I was able to run two areas of a clothing warehouse, work for a specialised metal company managing four drivers, working for one of the UK's biggest ecomm clothing companies and my fourth placement was as a Transport shift manager for a large DIY brand.
All of these placements gave me what I needed to start a successful career in Logistics. It also gives you time and opportunity to engage with your stakeholders and build long lasting relationships across the business.
Being a graduate means you get a lot of training. I was given Leadership and Management training, safety training and qualifications meaning I could run a transport operation.
As I moved my career on, I've also undertaken further training such as my ADR, security training and a level 5 apprenticeship.
The best part of the Graduate role is the challenge and pace. No day in Logistics is the same, there's always something challenging thrown at you and whilst on placement, you've got the support to face into these and learn from any mistakes made.
There's no bad bit to the Graduate scheme, some find it more difficult being away from home for the first time, but I didn't find that tough as I was away at school.

What do I love about XPO?
Being employed by XPO provided me with the opportunity to both study and work concurrently. Achieving my lifelong goal of completing university became a reality through XPO's support. In addition, I was promoted to the position of Transport Manager, gaining invaluable experience in overseeing others and managing a large, fast-moving goods operation. Throughout my tenure at XPO, I had several chances to attend senior management meetings and take part in the Graduate Assessment Centre, contributing to a rewarding experience. I love being around people and developing my skills, and XPO and my role gives me just that.
