After a great conversation, I applied the START Technology Internship Program. Completing interviews with other firms, I saw how different the interview process was with BNY Mellon: they kept in regular contact with me throughout. When it came to the actual interview, I was surprised at how approachable everyone was. The “People Focussed” core value was apparent from the beginning.

My internship is in the Markets Production Services team, specifically eFX Support. My day usually begins at 9am, checking my emails and messages for any tasks. I am currently working on a project finding a long-term solution to ensure that employees have the correct access to trading venues. So, I am emailing different trading venues, create mock-up access forms, and using excel to reconcile data. I have also been utilising BNY Mellon’s access to Pluralsight, especially allowing me to develop my skills in SQL and FX knowledge. Using these training resources, shadowing people, and learning from different teams, means that very day I am learning more and more. Through the E/BRGs, I have connected with other people passionate about accessibility and equal opportunities— especially within the WIN and HEART networks. Being able to talk to other disabled people within the company, and learn from their experiences has been invaluable. This has all lead to me wanting to return to BNY Mellon next year, for another summer internship before the Integrated MEng year of my degree.

My current role is in the Client coverage Investment Manager segment in the London QVS office. Upon joining, I received training on the use of tools and applications used to support clients and received sessions to learn about the broader range of teams across the ASD division. My tasks vary from day-to-day, with responsibilities including supporting Relationship Managers in updating and creating account plans for clients, processing high balance deposits, and research on clients’ acquisitions and the implications. Through my role so far, I have built a great foundation of knowledge and discovered the significant role BNY Mellon play as a market leader at the forefront of the industry. I have also had the opportunity to complete various online courses to enhance soft skills including effective communication and leadership. I have additionally had the opportunity to be a part of EBRG groups such as Future Leaders and WIN which has allowed me to connect with senior leaders in the organisation, finding out more about their role and career, and gaining invaluable advice from them. Everyone at BNY Mellon is very friendly and I have been provided an amazing opportunity to network within my division and beyond with other departments to gain great connections across the business and help further my career.

I have had the opportunity to get involved in a Business for Good Case Competition through which my team have proposed a strategy to help provide greater quality education in underserved regions. I have additionally discovered the work of Triple FS, an action-focused mentoring programme aiming to increase female leadership in the Financial Services Industry in Ireland, that I am attempting to help replicate in London. These have been amazing opportunities for me to think creatively and build on and make use of my network at BNY Mellon so far, to achieve these exciting goals and support future generations of leaders. I have enjoyed my experience at BNY Mellon, taking on new responsibilities, gaining an understanding for the workings of the organisation, and being supported by my manager and new network that have provided me support and advice to enhance my future career

From day one, I was warmly welcomed by BNY Mellon team. The orientation week was exceptionally well-structured, providing me with valuable insights into the company's culture, mission, and values. The emphasis on strength in diversity, integrity, passion for excellence and courage to lead left me feeling inspired and motivated to contribute my best.

There are many learning opportunities at BNY Mellon such as the interactive workshops, training sessions and townhalls which has given me a deeper understanding of the financial industry. As well as networking opportunities with senior management which provided me a unique chance to connect with experienced leaders. These interactions have allowed me to build professional relationships and expanding my horizons. Moreover, I must emphasise the guidance and support I received from mentors and managers were instrumental in refining my skills and fostering personal growth throughout my journey at BNY Mellon.

Before stumbling upon an internship listing on the web, I have never heard about BNY Mellon. However, I quickly became interested by its culture, size, and nature of their business, which to my surprise turned out to differ greatly from other banks.

One of my first tasks assigned by my manager was to have coffee and talk to everyone, which helped me to understand processes relatively quickly I was involved in as well as the bigger picture of how my line of business operates and interacts with other lines. Every day is a bit different: as an intern its important to learn. Therefore, I performed activities ranging from translating documentation from technical to human, entering data into the system, analysing and aggregating data and creating reports.

However, the most satisfying was the possibility of taking initiative and developing your own solutions. During my time here I was able to put my university knowledge into use and propose and develop a working prototype of a machine learning based solution to a problem of document misclassification. It wouldn’t be possible without interest and encouragement of my manager and colleagues. Creativity and interdisciplinary approach are very much encouraged and appreciated here!

All my positive experiences wouldn’t have been possible without all the positive people! BNY Mellon is client and result oriented, yet it manages to maintain the workplace relatively stress free. I got to know and work with interesting people with multitude of life and career paths from different countries. Any feedback I ever got was constructive but also managed to be encouraging. Engaging and fun integrations organised by HR made me truly feel as part of the community. This helped further develop my skills, consider new perspectives, and maintain excitement during my experience here.

In terms of career development, I also really appreciated unlimited access to Pluralsight. I was able to gain some further expertise in machine learning, but also learn the basics of risk management concepts and refresh some cybersecurity knowledge. Additionally, BNY Mellon gives opportunities to learn from one another. I joined AI/ML community of practice and was able to attend interesting lectures on the intersection of finance and AI. Lunch and learn sessions are an easy way to find out about what your colleagues do, while enjoying your lunch. All in all, I can summarise my opinion in one sentence: After the internship programme I will definitely consider a career at BNY Mellon.

This was right after I completed my second year in Computer Science at university. Currently, I am working in the Shared Service Engineering team based in Poland. My responsibilities include maintaining and enhancing company systems. During my tenure at BNY, I have contributed to the implementation of the asset cataloging system for employees all over Europe.

I typically start my day at 8:30 a.m. by reviewing the work I completed the previous day with a fresh perspective, considering if there are any ways, I can further enhance it. My team regularly provides helpful tips and guidance on how I can improve my programming skills and become a more valuable member of the team. Writing clean code for a complex project is a challenge, but it presents opportunities for me to learn and grow every day.

On a daily basis, I engage in discussions with my fellow interns regarding the tasks we have been assigned. We frequently exchange stories about how we overcame difficult challenges or offer assistance to someone who is struggling to solve a problem. By collaborating and providing advice, we ensure that no one is left to face their problems alone.

During my leisure time, I enjoy going to the gym, strolling through the forest, and assisting with everyday tasks at my family's farm. It is my aspiration to visit Nepal in the future and explore the rich culture of the Himalayan region.

I was appointed to the SSA (Shared Service Engineering) branch where I worked as a Back-end Developer. Since joining the team, I have been responsible for adding new features and fixing existing bugs in our project. I really appreciated atmosphere and people in the office. My typical day consisted of daily Agile meetings, where I reported to the team about my progress and blockers, as well as code reviews and writing Java code with Spring Boot framework. When working at BNY Mellon I improved my programming knowledge by taking multiple courses at Pluralsight, a learning platform provided to us by the firm. I feel more confident now because of the vast personal and professional experience acquired here.

During the internship I participated in many inspiring sessions with company leaders that broaden my horizons and helped visualize my future career path. I also took part in networking events where I met my colleagues and extended my connections. I am passionate about making an impact on the society I live in. I participated in charity events organized by the company, where I helped local community foundations.

As interns we had the opportunity to get to know each other and form new relationships through events organized by the campus team. We took part in laser tag game, community service events and many more. Outside of work I love travelling, playing on the guitar, reading books and watching TV shows.

Can’t wait to have an opportunity to come back here for the graduate program and continue my career path at BNY Mellon!

I chose this internship as it gave me the opportunity to gain experience in a line of business that I am interested in and because after prior experience dealing with BNY, I noticed that it is one of the firms that takes diversity and inclusion seriously, especially regarding encouraging more women in the industry.

A typical day as an intern would go as follows: getting a morning coffee and keeping up to date with my emails and Bloomberg news, attending the morning meeting and hearing updates from the whole investment team, working on my various projects and speaking with people in my team, afternoon meetings, then hitting the gym at the end of the day. Of course, there is the occasional EBRG event or social event to attend if time allows. The projects given to me have been great as they have allowed me to understand all the aspects of investment management- from the stock selection side to the commercial side. I have particularly enjoyed advancing my fundamental analysis and learning new skills such as R to create more sophisticated models. It’s also interesting to learn how each person in the investment team would approach a task (such as a company analysis) uniquely. We have also received training on different subjects such as credit analysis, Bloomberg and leadership that have been useful and will certainly be applicable in the future.

It does feel like the company is investing in us. Overall, I would say that this is a great place to work. I have had a variety of internships in the past though working in this line of business at this company, has shown me that a career in investing is what I want. I think that’s a good thing to get out of a work experience. I can’t fault the support network either- everyone is always willing to share their time and expertise

Meet Holly, part of the CAO Summer Intern Programme

I joined BNY Mellon as a CAO Summer Intern based within the Enterprise Sourcing Office at the Manchester Office. I chose this organisation to spend my summer after having such a great interview experience, I felt assured that this organisation would be a place I fit in well and that has proved to be true. The Summer Internship Program appealed to me because of the range of opportunities I would be exposed to, the program is extremely well structured and allows interns to maximise their time here.

I set myself two main goals with my manager at the beginning of my internship which was to advance my PowerPoint and Excel skills, these both tied in perfectly with the two main projects I was assigned. I have been working on updating all the training guides for a relatively new system my team launched, this is an important system that will be used across various areas of the bank. The old training guides that had been created originally were outdated due to the new enhancements made since the launch. This was a great opportunity for me to introduce myself to the new system, the training guides now have a fresh perspective and will be easier for a first-time user to understand. I used PowerPoint to create these guides which has already advanced my skills much further. My excel skills have also been improved by my second project which was to extract and export information from old files which are now stored in an excel tracker.

Alongside these projects within my team, I have been able to get involved in many other projects helping different lines of businesses. These are amazing opportunities to expand my network across the organisation and learn new skills. I have been heavily supported by my manager, team, and senior members since being at BNYM, the encouragement I have received to make the most of this experience has been unbelievable. There are no silly questions here which makes me feel comfortable in asking as many questions as I want to ensure I understand any given topic to the best of my ability. There is a great vibe across the organisation, especially within the Manchester office and this made the transition of moving to a new city for the Summer run smoothly.

Due to the size of the organisation and the global presence I have had the opportunity to meet many incredible individuals from different backgrounds. I haven’t come across an employee who has not been willing to spend some time with me to help navigate my time here. The highlight of my time here was the 1-1 call I had the CEO, this was a special moment that I know will stick with me throughout the rest of my career, the advice I was given from such an important figure was priceless. They are extremely invested in the success of early careers as the future leaders at BNYM, and I believe this is a great place to begin your career and progress within the organisation. From the many conversations I’ve had around the bank there is plenty of opportunity to make different career moves within the bank and this keeps myself reassured as someone who is not entirely sure where they want to go career wise yet.

The number of employees I have come across that have stayed with the bank +20 years is not surprising, I can see why people do not want to leave here. I would encourage anyone at university who has an interest in financial services to apply to the Summer Analyst Programme here at BNYM. I couldn’t fault my time here and 10 weeks doesn’t seem long enough. I know I will be leaving here with a totally different mindset about where I thought my future was going, I have made strong friendships among my cohort of interns and built a strong network of mentors that I know will help me navigate my next move. I will be sad when my internship comes to an end but if all goes well, I will hopefully return in a years’ time on the graduate scheme.

My line of business is Markets Technology and my role as an intern is the Production Services Analyst for the global Foreign Exchange (FX) team in Markets Technology.

In the Production Services, we are responsible for maintaining, updating existing products and finding new ways of manufacturing products in order to increase productivity. I have played an important role in this as I was given the responsibilities maintain and update products such as software used for monitoring our production services environment to make sure they are running effectively and be able to detect any potential issues before an incident occurs. I am also responsible for making sure that access to our trading venues is strictly for specific people required to have them. This includes being able to add, delete and modify user’s access on our trading venues.

Since the programme commenced, I have been able to build on the skill and knowledge I have acquired over the years in technology by not just seeing first-hand how things work but also being part of a team that works with other technology teams to achieve a common goal. Although I have come in as a tech intern, I have also been able broaden my knowledge about financial part of the business such as money markets, bond markets and the foreign exchange markets – which I was completely oblivious to prior to me joining this internship.

This is very exciting for me because I am gaining knowledge on a new subject. This has also helped me to increase my soft skills such as communication and collaboration. I have had to work with other teams in different time zones and with my colleague to make sure we are on track in our work. I have also recently signed up to the HEART E/BRG. I believe we share same values as HEART focuses promoting inclusive and equitable workplace where you can get that sense of belonging. They help by promoting the importance of mental health and have a caring and dependency hub which are for people that care for family members because of an illness or a health condition.

I believe such E/BRG is vital because you can only give the best of yourself to you team and work if you are mentally at your best and looking after a loved one can take a toll on you and I believe would make a difference to be able to talk about it with other people going through the same experience at the workplace, knowing that you are not alone and be able to uplift each other. Although, this is my first corporate experience, I couldn’t ask for a better place to start. At BNY Mellon, you are surrounded by talented individuals ready to help you reach your potential and as well as being able to progress in your career, you also have a good chance to grow as a person by improving your soft skills.

The reason for which I choose this bank over the Bank of America and Deutsche bank for which I had the interviews as well for is the culture. Which I had the chance to experience it during my insight day back in November for interns and graduates. I got the chance to ask some questions to my interviewers as well and the answers that stood out to me is that both people from BNY had the same answer.

The main reason they moved into the company was the culture and that’s why they still here since 4 and 5 years ago respectively. My main activities involve looking at the current tax process flow for closed accounts and emailing relationship managers for pay away details for clients that don’t bank with us anymore but still have a tax reclaim pending. The second stage of my role was to question the process as it was very manual and come up with ways or suggestions in which we could minimise manual process and increase automation.

One project that I really enjoyed working on is the “Impact: Food and Heritage Expo”, which basically looks at raising awareness within the company about the different cultures, that are present and mainly their cuisines. I see this is a great opportunity to increase awareness and acceptance of different culture present within the bank.

We have received a lot of shadowing opportunities in different departments to understand better how BNY works in a big one flow system within operations. I feel like one of the key takeaways for me is the ability to confidently say I can network in a confident and efficient manner with anyone, this is due to the fact there is the accessibility to reach out to senior management and get chance to speak to them as long as you follow the proper channels. I am part of the Good for case competition that looks at increasing awareness for some of the United Nation’s goals. I will say this company has a very friendly and diverse culture, which makes it a great place to work at.

Typical day of mine involve attending many project meetings, preparing reports, checking, and reviewing data quality and coming up with ideas how our current projects can be improved. Because of joining BNY Mellon I had an opportunity to complete few basic agile courses and attend several meetings where I can develop my knowledge in that field. I had the pleasure of being engaged in Social Impact activities that aim to help dog shelter. Moreover, the Internship program gave me the opportunity to meet people who are so passionate about their work and have enormous financial knowledge what really inspired me to future development. The variety of projects I was engage in show me broad range of perspectives which are waiting for me after graduation. The time spent with my team pointed me out what concepts/skills I need to develop to support my future career goals. That Internship opportunity helped me find out that I finance world is form me. I joined BNY Mellon through the Emerging Leaders Programme in 2018 and had the opportunity to rotate through three different teams during my first year, which was a great way to get a feel for what I enjoyed doing at the bank. I had returned to BNY Mellon after completing an internship there in 2017 – the reason I came back was due to the friendly, warm culture and the strength of the relationships I had built with my colleagues.

BNY Mellon empowers you to lead, and rewards you for acting like an owner and pursuing your own interests and ideas – in addition to my day job, I’ve had the opportunity to lead a Diversity, Equity Inclusion partnership with a strategic client, plus host over 25 firms in our office alongside The World Wide Fund for Nature and The Natural History Museum on the topic of Biodiversity.

Back to my day role – I have been excited to see how my career at BNY Mellon has progressed since graduating from the Emerging Leaders Programme. In 2019 I spent 2 years working for our Global Head of Relationship Management working on strategic initiatives and looking after our Alternative asset manager clients. In 2021 I was promoted to Vice President and I have been working for our International Chief Administrative Officer ever since. I’m looking forward to taking my next step soon.

Kai Ezz - Great experience with BNY Mellon SETUP program

Graduate Profile

I've been involved in the 18-month SETUP program with BNY Mellon for around a year now, and the experience so far has been great as I have undergone a great amount of personal and technical growth since my onboarding.

We began with a 2-week training program in the BNY tech stack, which was fast-paced and full of varied activities, including group work, labs and demonstrations. We learned everything from programming paradigms to vulnerability defense to project architecture and had the opportunity to speak to a plethora of senior developers, including one of the world's few Java Champions.

After our onboarding, we were assigned our teams, with who we will work for the remainder of our program -- I work in client onboarding, which is the product that facilitates new legal entity creation with the bank. My role is full-stack, which I love particularly because it allows me to ascertain a high-level understanding of our system, as well as a more granular comprehension of the technologies it's comprised of.

My day-to-day schedule involves SCRUM rituals such as stand-up meetings between the pod(team) that I work on, where we exchange our updates and help each other out when we run into issues. I also work every day on my assigned tasks, which as mentioned can be either front-end or back-end changes. I've worked with all aspects of the system and my work has always been varied and interesting.

Everyone in my pod has a collaborative mindset and I've learned a lot from speaking to them about debugging techniques, programming paradigms I wasn't familiar with, industry practices and much more. I really enjoy working in a team as I feel supported in my role and able to grow professionally.

As I have grown thanks to my pod, I also appreciate the independence and responsibility I have been given to do work on my own and to learn to problem-solve from the ground up. I have had a number of opportunities to add new functionality to our system, but my favourite project was a DevOps contribution. Without going into too much detail, I made a script to automate an aspect of the development process that was time-consuming to do manually. I am proud of my impact on the team and happy to have been able to streamline the development process for my colleagues.

Outside of my technical work, I've connected with many remarkable people at BNY through getting involved in Employee Business Resource Groups (EBRGs). These include PRISM, our LGBT EBRG, and HEART, our disability resource group. I've also connected with other graduate employees or interns across BNY through social events organized by our campus team, and learned a lot from speaking to them. I've found everyone at BNY, whether they are engineers or not, graduates or not, offers an interesting perspective and brings something special to the table.
