Meet Karolina, a Graduate Maintenance Engineer in Kingspan

1. What does your role in Kingspan involve?

In my role I mainly work on maintenance improvement projects. Better maintenance makes machines more reliable and results in fewer machine breakdowns; this is important as it optimises machine performance and maintenance costs. My role has a good mix of being in the office as well as on the production floor; it involves a lot of research regarding the machines being maintained as well as organising that information in a useful manner.

2. What is the most interesting project you have been involved in since you joined?

The most interesting project I’ve been involved with is helping to digitalise maintenance data by implementing a computerised maintenance management system (CMMS); such a platform optimises data collection and reporting. Through this project I am able to learn about how to effectively look after machines while making a long-term impact on the maintenance processes used.

3. What prompted you to apply to Kingspan?

I wanted to put my degree into use but had never worked in my field of study so I wanted to apply for a graduate scheme where more guidance would be provided. I liked how at Kingspan I could have my own mentor who would guide me during my first steps in my career, and that I’d get a chance to network with my peers during the graduate scheme modules. I was also impressed by Kingspan’s care for the community, environment and their constant want for improvement.

4. What was your experience of the Kingspan graduate recruitment process?

The recruitment process was different to others; it was more focused on problem solving abilities and my overall character rather than checking hard skills and technical competencies. The interview part was a good opportunity for me to get my first impression of Kingspan, and I enjoyed how it felt more like a conversation rather than an interrogation.

5. Have you any tips for someone else thinking of applying to Kingspan?

It is a great and supportive community to be part of. The graduate scheme allows you to make lasting connections, explore, and develop your own abilities. For my position, I had to move to another country, and it was made easy for me thanks to my manager and great background planning overall. My tip is to not be scared and to apply, as you will have a great network that will take care of you.

6. Looking back, what qualities and behaviours do you think you displayed during the recruitment process which made you a good fit for Kingspan?

During the recruitment process I saw an emphasis on creativity and teamwork; the process included a short presentation as well as a team exercise where good collaboration and quick thinking had been important. Qualities and behaviours that I displayed included actively participating in the conversation, seeing the bigger picture and ensuring my ideas are heard, making sure other speakers had been included, and keeping a positive attitude (remember to smile).
