Graduate Consultant Data Scientist

Ordnance Survey

I joined the OS’s graduate scheme shortly after I finished my undergraduate degree in Geography from Durham University.

Throughout my degree and during some industrial experience – Ordnance Survey has always been highly regarded for its geospatial data catalogue. I was lucky to learn a lot more about the OS through my involvement with the Sponsored Dissertation Programme where OS supported my final-year dissertation researching the 3D mapping capabilities of drones. Having witnessed the innovative, forward-thinking culture I knew it was something I wanted to be a part of!

I joined OS in September 2017 as a Graduate Data Scientist. Over the past few months – I have been working across different internal/externally facing departments and developing my own data science capability. These include working directly with our customers in the Consultancy & Technical Services team helping them get the most out of OS data – to developing new methods to derive data from our aerial imagery in the Business Change & Innovation team.

At present, I’m on secondment to the Welsh Assembly Government based out of Cardiff. Part of the Geography team, I am primarily responsible for the technical delivery of the Physical Environment and the Access to Services domains within the Welsh Index of Multiple Deprivation (WIMD). Alongside this secondment – I am also working in collaboration with the Data Science Campus at the Office for National Statistics. Together, we are working on developing a methodology to calculate the degree of naturalness for residential gardens across Great Britain to improve the data science capabilities of private greenspace infrastructure.
