Meet Roisin - Application Consultant

What is it that you do?

As consultants, we get this question all the time by friends, family, and other grads looking for a career path to delve in to. Unfortunately for all, the answer is almost always “it depends”. What you do on a day-to-day basis depends on the type of project, the team, the phase of the project you’re in, the current trends in the tech world, and the client.

I’m an Applications Consultant (Infrastructure Engineer) working in a technical team focused primarily on Oracle Cloud Infrastructure. This involves creating, managing, and updating a client’s cloud infrastructure, as well as their databases, virtual machines, and any other elements they require for a fully functional cloud system. Projects can range from simply updating a client’s existing cloud, to creating a brand-new infrastructure from the ground up.

What does a day in the life look like for you?

Over the course of the week, I might migrate a database and ensure the client has all the correct documentation for it, set up a future migration and its documents, or I might help sort out any outstanding issues the client is having with the new servers. Some weeks will have more migrations planned than others, which makes for busy days, while others will be calmer, and I can crack on with the less technical and more admin side of things. That could mean responding to emails, meetings, sharing information to other team members, knowledge transfer sessions, etc. I might also do more work outside of the project or personal development, such as training, volunteering, and internal calls.

It’s this variety that makes the job unique and fun, despite how hard it can make it to describe! No two weeks will look the same and every project will be different.

What advice would you give to students looking to apply to Capgemini?

My best piece of advice is to be proactive, in both your work and your learning. If you finish a task or find you aren’t being challenged enough, then it’s in everyone’s best interests that you reach out to a teammate, manager, or team lead and say as much. It’ll help show people you are ready for more work and are a valuable member of the team. Plus, helping your colleagues is a great thing to do anyway! Another way to be proactive is to participate in non-project-based work, like volunteering, internal talks, or one of the many networks across the company. This is an area you can really have fun with and pursue for your own personal development.
