Meet Phoebe, a Senior Planner

1.How did you start your career with us and why did you choose Carter Jonas?
I first joined Carter Jonas in 2021 for a summer placement after staying in touch with Sarah Cox, Head of Planning in Leeds, following some earlier work experience at a different company. After that summer, I worked part-time while finishing my master’s, then came back full-time as a Graduate Planner in 2022.

2. What sort of work do you do and what are the skills required?
I work across a wide mix of projects — everything from planning applications and appraisals to land tribunals and Local Plan representations, covering sectors like residential, healthcare, education, leisure, and telecoms. In terms of the skills required, you need to be organised, a good communicator, and confident writing reports and solving problems — all skills I’ve built up a lot since joining.

3. Is there a particular project you have enjoyed working on?
There have been a lot of projects I’ve enjoyed, and the variety is definitely one of the best parts of the job. A few favourites include a new hospital wing, some interesting residential schemes, and a land tribunal case involving telecoms masts — all very different, but equally rewarding.

4. What makes Carter Jonas a great place to work?
The people and the projects. Everyone’s genuinely friendly and supportive, which makes a big difference when you’re starting out in your career. Being able to ask questions and learn from experienced colleagues has been invaluable. It’s a bit of a cliché, but no two days are the same — and that’s what makes it enjoyable.

5. What advice would you give to someone that is considering a career in property?
Try to get some work experience — it’s how I started out, and keeping in touch with people from those short work experiences has really helped. Also, don’t be afraid to ask questions. It’s the best way to learn, especially early on, and most people are more than
