How did you start your career with us and why did you choose Carter Jonas?
I joined Carter Jonas after receiving an offer of graduate employment following my attendance of the summer internship programme in 2023. I was drawn to the firm’s strong reputation and national presence. Coming from a non-cognate degree background, I wanted to pursue the degree apprenticeship route, and Carter Jonas stood out for its experience in supporting graduates through both the master’s programme and the Assessment of Professional Competence (APC). The combination of scale and personal support made it the ideal choice.
What sort of work do you do and what are the skills required?
I am working towards becoming a rural chartered surveyor, with experience in estate management, valuations, purchase and sale, and diversification projects. I also work with the Natural Capital team on Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) projects, such as establishing Habitat Banks and advising developers on their planning requirements. The role requires analytical skills, adaptability, and problem-solving, as well as strong communication and negotiation abilities when working with clients and stakeholders.
Is there a particular project you have enjoyed working on?
I have particularly enjoyed working on Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) projects, as the legislation only came into effect in 2024. It is a new and fast-evolving area, which makes each project both challenging and rewarding. Collaborating with colleagues and external stakeholders has been a fantastic opportunity to meet engaging people while contributing to an expanding sector. I am also motivated by knowing that success in these projects supports biodiversity, enables species restoration, and helps counter the effects of climate change.
What makes Carter Jonas a great place to work?
Carter Jonas offers the best of both worlds: the scale of a national firm with the supportive feel of a local team. There is always a wide range of projects to get involved in, and the firm places real emphasis on learning and development. As a graduate, I’ve felt encouraged and supported while being given opportunities to take on real responsibility.
What advice would you give to someone that is considering a career in property?
I would encourage anyone to consider a career in property, regardless of their academic background. The apprenticeship route is a fantastic way to combine study with hands-on experience, and the variety of work helps you develop skills across law, finance, negotiation, and project management. It’s a challenging but rewarding career path where there is plenty of opportunity to engage with a wide range of projects and people.
