Why did you choose Farrer & Co for your training contract?
Firstly, because of the genuine focus the firm places on training its trainees. The firm dedicates extensive resources to our training and offers countless training sessions and you can really tell that the Knowledge Lawyers, Associates and Partners are dedicated to our learning when working with them. Secondly, I was really impressed with the variety and complexity of the work that Farrers offers, and was surprised by the firm providing a true hands-on experience where you are given responsibility right away as a trainee. In addition, this work tends to be carried out in small teams usually including a partner which I find a really unique learning experience that isn't offered at many firms.
What skills have you gained from your time here?
I think I've built good office etiquette, which can initially be quite stressful. Otherwise, my attention to detail, time management, drafting and even socialising skills have all improved. In general, trainees inevitably deal with something unfamiliar every day and hopefully do better when we come across it again.
How have you found the training contract so far?
I worked as a paralegal for a year in the Contentious Trusts and Estates team prior to starting my training contract so it has been very nice to be back and see everyone. So far, I've really enjoyed meeting the people in my new team (Corporate), the huge variety of work I've already been involved in and the abundance of social activities. In my first month, I've already played cricket with clients, had drinks at rooftops and have been playing football with the firm's team. Getting to know our trainee cohort has also been very fun.
Throughout the process, the recruitment team and interviewers were welcoming and supportive, always focused on helping you perform your best. My advice to future applicants is to be yourself and let your personality and enthusiasm shine through.
What would you say to someone considering a training contract at Farrer & Co?
All of Farrers' practice areas are very strong and the firm offers a unique six-seat rotation over the training contract. If you have an open mind about what you want to qualify into, Farrers is the place for you as there are so many growth opportunities. Everyone is friendly and eager for trainees to learn, there are so many social events available, and the work is really interesting. I think the biggest indicator that coming to Farrers will be a good decision is the number of people that have trained here who are still here 10, 15, 25 years later.
