Guy Carpenter Graduate Scheme, Global Specialities

Tell us a bit about yourself and your journey so far with Guy Carpenter?

After originally planning to go into the legal field, I attained my A-levels and went on study Law at Queen Mary University of London. However, I soon discovered the world of (re)insurance and knew that this was the perfect career for me. I applied to the Guy Carpenter graduate scheme and started in January 2021, where I was placed into Global Specialties and rotated around key lines of business. These rotations included marine, non-marine, trade credit and aviation. Following the graduate scheme I progressed full-time into the aviation and aerospace broking team. I also have the opportunity to work on bloodstock business.

What stood out about Guy Carpenter?

I was initially drawn to Guy Carpenter because of its strong reputation within the industry as being one of the best broking houses. This meant that I could be involved in global, high-quality and exciting work. After attending the assessment centre, the culture at Guy Carpenter was a real stand-out. Every colleague I met was extremely welcoming and supportive, which left me feeling valued and as though I fitted in well.

How have you found your role?

My role has been a perfect blend of variety, challenge and opportunity. There are many different things you can get involved in and you are constantly learning. The social nature of the re(insurance) market makes this role even more rewarding.

What is the culture like at Guy Carpenter?

The culture is supportive and ambitious. Whenever you have a question colleagues will always have time for you, whether in a minute or a day they are committed to helping you learn and grow. It is inspiring to work with people who see the value in bringing the younger generation into the industry. There is a keenness to give you as much exposure as possible within meetings and in-front of clients to help you excel in your career.

What do you enjoy most about your role?

My favourite part about my role is how much importance is placed on face-to-face interaction and relationships. Whether it’s being able to present to a client or meeting with an underwriter to negotiate a renewal, you are rarely at your desk. The relationships we build form real friendships and this is something you don’t find in every industry.

What would be your biggest piece of advice for someone interested in applying?

Don’t let the fact that you may not know a lot about insurance put you off from applying. You don’t need to know it all on day one. The most important thing is to show enthusiasm and ask questions.
