Systems Engineer

BAE Systems

Amber’s journey to BAE Systems is one of transformation and discovery. Growing up in Freckleton, just a stone’s throw from the Warton site, she was familiar with BAE Systems’ reputation as a leading employer offering lifelong career opportunities. After five years teaching maths at secondary school and facing health challenges that limited her mobility, Amber was ready for a fresh start, one that would put her maths degree to a new use.

In September 2024, Amber joined the BAE Systems Graduate Programme, an immersive 18-month placement designed to build skills and open doors across the business. “Upon completion of the programme you have the chance to stay in your role or explore new teams and areas of the business,” Amber explains. For someone new to engineering, the structure and support made all the difference.

As a Systems Engineer working on the Typhoon Avionics Displays and Controls, Amber’s role is at the heart of complex design projects. She gathers and integrates requirements, collaborating closely with code and test teams to solve challenges. “Being involved in a project that makes a real-world impact gives me a huge sense of pride and achievement,” she says.

Amber’s initial lack of engineering experience didn’t hold her back. “I felt quite daunted at first, but the support from my managers, colleagues, and the graduate team was fantastic. I also have access to the BAE Systems Engineering Academy, which offers ongoing training both online and in person.” The programme’s development opportunities and the strong network of early careers peers have helped Amber thrive, providing a community where she can share challenges and celebrate successes.

Beyond her day-to-day role, Amber actively contributes to the business in other ways. She’s taken part in stretch assignments like analysing BAE Systems’ carbon emissions data and improving the early careers programme documentation to better guide future graduates. Amber also volunteers as a STEM Ambassador, visiting schools and community groups to inspire the next generation to consider STEM careers. “I’m currently working on a presentation to showcase my career journey thus far to children at a school within a deprived area of Blackburn with the aim that I will encourage others.”

Amber’s enthusiasm extends beyond work. Based near her hometown, she enjoys an excellent work-life balance, volunteering as a Scout leader and appreciating the area’s mix of outdoor activities like hiking and paddleboarding, as well as cultural highlights in nearby Liverpool and Manchester. Socially, she values the friendships formed through the graduate programme, from Paris trips to game nights, these connections make her feel part of a supportive community.

Looking ahead, Amber is excited to continue growing within BAE Systems. “I’m not yet sure exactly where my path will lead, but I know there are many opportunities to develop new skills and explore different roles across the business.”

Amber’s story highlights the unique opportunities BAE Systems offers early careers graduates, a place to grow, be supported, and make a real impact on the future of engineering.
