Why Irwin Mitchell?

Irwin Mitchell truly embodies its values and has a warm, friendly culture that makes it an excellent place to learn and develop as a trainee solicitor. The supportive environment helps me provide the best possible service to clients while working alongside talented, approachable colleagues. It is a place where people genuinely care about one another, making it somewhere I look forward to coming to work every day.

What does your role involve?

I am currently a Court of Protection trainee solicitor in my second seat. My work includes drafting applications to the Court of Protection, liaising with the Court to progress matters, attending annual review meetings with clients and their families, taking detailed attendance notes, and assisting with a wide range of follow-up actions. These can include arranging property insurance, liaising with investment advisers, ensuring client information is up to date, and managing payments. I regularly work with external organisations such as the DWP, the Court, investment managers and case managers, as well as collaborating with colleagues in departments such as Personal Injury and Serious Injury. In my first seat in Private Client, I attended client meetings, drafted wills, trusts and other legal documents, handled new client enquiries, conducted legal research, and liaised with various third-party organisations.

A project you enjoyed working on

A project I particularly enjoyed was supporting an urgent Court of Protection matter with a strict court deadline. Working against a tight timeframe, I attended several client meetings to gather the necessary information and took responsibility for coordinating documentation and completing court forms. It required careful organisation, attention to detail and effective time management to ensure everything was prepared and filed on time. I enjoyed being trusted with such a high level of responsibility.

The best and worst parts of your job

The best part of my role is meeting clients and their families and seeing the positive difference we make to their lives. There is no better feeling than knowing your work is genuinely helping someone. The most testing part is often spending time on hold to third-party organisations. My top tip is to continue working on other tasks while waiting, as it helps maintain productivity and keeps your time recording up to date.

What training have you received?

I completed a Law degree and am currently studying for the SQE alongside my training contract. In addition, Irwin Mitchell provides a range of mandatory legal training and professional development opportunities to ensure colleagues remain up to date with legal and regulatory requirements.

Are you involved in any networks?

I am actively involved in IM Respect, Irwin Mitchell’s equality, diversity and inclusion network. Through this, I have written articles on religious festivals and helped organise events for South Asian Heritage Month in the Leeds office and a successful Eid celebration in the Manchester office. I am also the Regional Lead for Leeds for our PRIME programme, where I organise and host the annual work experience programme for sixth-form students. Supporting young people and giving back to the local community is something I find particularly rewarding.

What makes your organisation a great place to work?

What makes Irwin Mitchell such a great place to work is its people. Colleagues are not only friendly, supportive and approachable, but they are also driven to deliver the best outcomes for clients while supporting one another both professionally and personally. The firm's flexible working approach, commitment to development, and opportunities to attend conferences, seminars and networking events have enabled me to expand my knowledge, build my professional network and continue growing throughout my career.
