I joined IM as a Paralegal in November 2023 and applied for a training contract the following month. This was my fourth time applying. Within my first few weeks at the firm, I knew that IM was the right firm for me.
I applied to IM because I wanted to complete my training contract at a full-service law firm where I could gain experience across a range of teams and practice areas. This was important to me because I wanted to keep an open mind about my future career as a solicitor, and I felt I would benefit from the comprehensive and varied training offered.
I was also drawn to IM’s commitment to growth and development. With women making up over 50% of the partnership, I could see clear opportunities for progression. Working alongside some of the best professionals in the industry has reinforced my view that IM is a firm where I can learn, develop, and build a long-term career.
Did you apply to any other firms?
I previously applied to a few other firms, however, in the year I received my training contract offer, I had only applied to IM.
How many attempts did it take you to get your IM offer?
I applied to IM four times.
How far did you get each time?
With each application, I progressed slightly further through the process. I think this was because over time, I had researched IM in greater depth and I developed a much stronger understanding of the firm. My legal and non-legal work experience had also improved.
The first few times I applied, I was unsuccessful in the initial stages. In my third application cycle, I attended the assessment centre but did not progress to the next stage. I then joined the firm as a Paralegal and applied for a fourth time where I was fortunately successful.
How did you feel after not getting through?
It can be really disheartening and demotivating when you receive a rejection email (I have had three!).
What did you do to make yourself feel better?
I think it is important to give yourself time to process the disappointment. Once you have done that, you can reflect on what might have gone wrong and what you could do differently next time. I would also recommend reaching out to the Early Careers team to ask for feedback.
I kept reminding myself that I really wanted to train at IM, and that motivated me to pick myself up and try again. What is meant for you will not pass you by.
What did you do next to change the outcome?
With each application cycle, I felt more prepared and could see a clear improvement in my answers. I researched the firm in greater detail, refined my answers, and continued to develop both my legal and non-legal experience. I also became more familiar with the process which helped with knowing what to expect.
