Hi, I'm Ikechukwu, a Mechanical Engineer within the Building Services team at AtkinsRéalis. I achieved a Master's in Mechanical Engineering, graduating with Honors from the University of Warwick. I completed the Graduate Development Programme, where I received comprehensive training, solved complex challenges, and contributed to delivering efficient, sustainable solutions.

What has been your favorite experience on the programme?

Networking opportunities with my fellow graduate colleagues on the programme at social events and on collaborative projects. I have really enjoyed these experiences because they're great opportunities to engage with professionals from a variety of backgrounds and cultures. I have also enjoyed the training modules that have solidified my understanding of the fundamental skills needed to effectively deliver in my role in the HVAC sector.

What is the best thing about working for AtkinsRéalis?

AtkinsRéalis is committed to employee wellbeing, fostering a culture where every employee feels valued, supported and empowered to succeed. AtkinsRéalis works on a variety of large‑scale projects that are very demanding, and it grants early career employees good exposure in their retrospective fields from the jump.

What is your top tip for new graduates?

Familiarize yourself with the organization's goals, values and clients, aligning them with your individual contributions. Prioritize building strong relationships across teams, disciplines and various levels of seniority. These will open doors to opportunities and mentorships. Take ownership of your professional development. Define your career objectives, create a development plan with your line manager and make the most of training resources and certifications provided by your team.

How is your professional development going?

My professional development is going great. I was recently awarded runner‑up at the 2024 CIBSE ASHRAE Graduate of the Year Awards, where I gave a short presentation exploring the main implications for building performance of changing demographics, lifestyles and the need to keep people safe, healthy, and productive!

Shortly after, I completed the Graduate Development Programme and was promoted to Mechanical Engineer. I also regularly attend technical forum events where I've gained deeper insights into industry best practices, new technologies, and innovative solutions.

Why choose AtkinsRéalis?

I found AtkinsRéalis' core values very appealing—safety, integrity, innovation and collaboration. AtkinsRéalis offers a compelling environment for professionals seeking a fulfilling and impactful career. They're dedicated to engineering a better future for our planet and its people, which aligns with my personal ambitions and beliefs. The company also supports flexible working, which I believe is essential for the focus and wellbeing of its employees, as well as opportunities for professional development, which are vital for work‑life balance.
