My Journey to Joining the Ocado Group Business Management Graduate Scheme
Graduating from university can feel like standing at a crossroads, unsure which path to take. For me, that uncertainty was particularly strong. With a degree in History, I wasn’t sure how my skills could translate into a career. I’d always seen myself as someone with strong interpersonal skills, a passion for teamwork and a love of learning, but I didn’t know where to channel that energy. Then I discovered Ocado Group.

Why Ocado Group Stood Out
Ocado Group’s emphasis on innovation immediately appealed to me. As a technology-driven company revolutionising the global grocery market and now beyond with Ocado Intelligent Automation, it stood out as a forward-thinking, dynamic workplace: an exciting environment where I could thrive. I wanted to work for a company that embraced change and was constantly looking for new ways to grow and improve.
Even with my non-technical background, I saw how the job description resonated with my skill set. Ocado Group’s graduate programme didn’t require a specific degree which was refreshing. They actively sought diverse perspectives, and I thought my curiosity, adaptability and desire to learn would make me a good fit.

The Application Process
My application journey was far from ordinary. I was backpacking through Southeast Asia at the time and participated in the assessment centre virtually from Vietnam! I’m so grateful for how accommodating and supportive the recruitment team was in making that possible. It is a testament to the company’s flexibility and their commitment to finding the right people - no matter the circumstances.

Breaking Preconceptions About Tech Careers
Initially, I wasn’t sure if a tech company was the right fit for me. Like many others, I assumed that a tech career required a technical degree or expertise. But as I researched more about Ocado Group, I was amazed by the cutting-edge technology they are developing and the global partnerships they have built. I realised that they value a broad range of skills and I grew confident that my ability to adapt, think critically and build relationships would allow me to succeed.

The Graduate Programme: A World of Opportunities
The rotational structure of Ocado Group’s Business Management Graduate Programme was one of the biggest draws for me. Over two years, I will complete four six-month placements across different parts of the business. This structure not only gives me a holistic understanding of how the company operates but also allows me to continuously learn, adapt and grow.

In each new role, I have the chance to make meaningful connections with colleagues across the business. In my first rotation, I set up meetings with wider team members to learn about their roles and how we can collaborate. This proactive approach, supported by Ocado’s open and welcoming culture, has helped me build a strong professional network early in my career.

The programme also includes the Future Leaders Programme (FLP) which focuses on developing key professional skills, such as public speaking and effective communication. These masterclasses are invaluable for both personal growth and building connections with fellow graduates.

Building Confidence and Skills
Since joining, I’ve been amazed by how much I’ve learned in just a few months. Whether it’s improving my data skills with tools like Google Sheets or gaining a deeper understanding of business operations, I’ve grown both professionally and personally. Ocado Group’s culture encourages experimentation and learning, which has helped me become more confident in tackling new challenges.

Championing Diversity and Inclusion
As a young woman in a traditionally male-dominated industry, I’ve been inspired by Ocado Group’s commitment to diversity and inclusion. I joined the ‘Women in Tech’ community in my first few weeks, which is actively driving positive change within the company. A highlight for me was attending the Women of Silicon Roundabout event in November, where I connected with incredible women in the tech industry and learned from their experiences. Ocado supported me every step of the way, further reinforcing their commitment to empowering employees.

Work-Life Balance and Unique Benefits
Ocado Group’s benefits are another standout feature. One of my favourites is the ‘30 Days Work From Anywhere’ policy, which lets employees work remotely from anywhere in the world. I’m planning to visit my sister in the USA soon, and it is amazing to have this flexibility without using up all of my annual leave. It’s clear that Ocado values work-life balance and employee well-being, which makes it an incredibly rewarding place to work.

Joining a Supportive Community
Starting my career as part of a graduate cohort has been a fantastic experience. From day one, I have had an incredible support network of peers and mentors. The friendships I have built, combined with the collaborative and inclusive culture at Ocado Group, have made my transition into the professional world seamless and enjoyable.

Looking Ahead
Joining Ocado Group has been a transformative experience. I’ve already grown so much in a short amount of time, and I’m excited to see what the future holds as I continue my journey on the Business Management Graduate Programme. For anyone considering a graduate scheme, my advice is simple: be open to opportunities outside your comfort zone. You never know where they might lead—for me, it led to an exciting career with Ocado Group!
