Big multinational companies such as Nissan and AkzoNobel still maintain a presence in Newcastle, providing local employment in engineering and manufacturing roles.

In terms of retail outlets, nearby Gateshead is home to the largest shopping centre in Europe: the intu MetroCentre. National retailers here include Next and Marks & Spencer, with some offering graduate training schemes in store management, merchandising and buying. Newcastle itself is well known for its bustling city centre.

Newcastle has gained a reputation as one of the UK's favourite student cities, partly due to its affordable cost of living and legendary nightlife. Newcastle University recently embarked on a £200m programme of investment in its facilities and campus. The university ranks particularly highly for its postgraduate courses in civil engineering, cancer studies, and architecture, built environment and planning.  

Northumbria University ranks consistently well among the top new universities, running well regarded postgraduate courses in social work, business studies and general engineering.
