Newcastle is traditionally known for its role in heavy industries such as coal mining and ship building. The service and retail sectors are now major graduate employers.

Big multinational companies such as Nissan and AkzoNobel still maintain a presence in Newcastle, providing local employment in engineering and manufacturing roles.

In terms of retail outlets, nearby Gateshead is home to the largest shopping centre in Europe: the intu MetroCentre. National retailers here include Next and Marks & Spencer, with some offering graduate training schemes in store management, merchandising and buying. Newcastle itself is well known for its bustling city centre.

Newcastle University recently embarked on a £200m programme of investment in its facilities and campus. Northumbria University ranks consistently well among the top new universities, running well regarded postgraduate courses in social work, business studies and general engineering.
