The Guardian UK 300: top construction, civil engineering and surveying employers

…as voted for by students and graduates

The Guardian UK 300 features the largest and most comprehensive annual survey of student opinion on graduate careers, employers and their own job hunts. The survey determines not only the most popular 300 graduate employers in the UK overall, but also the most popular graduate employers in a range of career sectors, including construction.

The top graduate employers for construction, civil engineering and surveying are listed in the table below. Arup has retained its position at the top of the table, but AECOM and Atkins have swapped places, with AECOM taking the second slot and Atkins the third. It’s worth noting that the top four employers are engineering consultancies rather than construction contractors.

Students interested in construction, civil engineering or quantity surveying careers…

  • were more likely than average to have completed an internship of two months or more: 16% of first-year students had versus 9% on average; 33% of penultimate years had versus 21% on average; and 38% of finalists had versus 33% on average
  • were less likely than average to be worried about their future career: 53% of students interested in the sector said that they were, versus 60% of students on average
  • appeared to be interested in working internationally: 28% of students intended to work for a large international company, as opposed to 25% on average, and 71% rated international interaction/opportunities as ‘important’ or ‘very important’, as opposed to 69% on average across all sectors.*

*Statistics have been rounded.

Over 73,500 undergraduates took part in the trendence Graduate Survey, which formed the basis of the results in The Guardian UK 300.
